Dear Parents/Carers,
Welcome to the Year 4 Spring Newsletter.
The children will continue their journey along the Homerswood Pathway Curriculum, which encourages children to grow, be curious and discover.
For your information the table below shows the areas we will be covering in each subject and contains some links you may find useful:

Topics and how to support your child. |

English |
We will be using many fiction and non-fiction texts to continue working on sentence structure and vocabulary building. We will be focusing on text types and purposes of different texts to develop our writing. We will be writing reports, narratives, diary entries and persuasive adverts throughout different units. We will focus on Spoken language and Reading as well as writing in different forms. Continue to read with your child or encourage them to be reading to maintain their love of books. Please see the long term writing plan on the school website for a more detailed breakdown of our writing units this term. |

Maths |
Topics will include: Geometry and Measurement (Perimeter, Area, Symmetry) Decimals Money Fractions Multiplying 2 and 3 digit numbers Please continue to focus on learning times tables facts. Computing |
Programming: repetition in shapes. We will create programs by planning, modifying, and testing commands to create shapes and patterns. We will use Logo, a text-based programming language. Data and Information: Data Logging We will consider how and why data is collected over time. We will consider the senses that humans use to experience the environment and how computers can use special input devices called sensors to monitor the environment. Then we will collect data as well as access data captured over long periods of time and will look at data points, data sets, and logging intervals. Hinduism: What do Hindus believe God is like? Christianity: Why do Christians call the day Jesus died Good Friday? |

Art |
Painting and mixed media - light and dark: In this unit, children will learn about the formal elements of painting (colour, form and tone). They will learn how to add a tint and shade by adding white or black and how to use these to create a 3D effect when painting. |

Science |
States of Matter: This unit takes children through six lessons where they learn how to: compare and group materials together, according to whether they are solids, liquids or gases; observe that some materials change state when they are heated or cooled, and observe the melting point at which this happens; and finally, identify the part played by evaporation and condensation in the water cycle and associate the rate of evaporation with temperature. Living Things and Their Habitats: This unit takes children through six lessons where they learn how to: recognise that living things can be grouped in a variety of ways; and explore and use classification keys to help group, identify and name a variety of living things in their local and wider environment. |

History |
How hard was it to invade and settle in Britain? Roman Britain - Children will learn about the Roman invasion of Britain and its impact on the lives of the Celts. They will consider whether the Roman settlement was a positive experience for all involved, and explore the long-term legacy of the invasion. |

Geography |
Where does our food come from? In this unit we will be learning about where North and South America are on a world map. We will also be looking at climate zones to work out where the food we eat came from and its journey to get to us. |

MFL |
We are going to focus on the topics “At The Cafe” and “In the Classroom”. |
|
PE |
Gymnastics- In this unit, we will be learning about patch and point balances and how to work as a team to create a gymnastic routine using the apparatus. Handball- In Handball, the children will be learning about the different types of throws for either passing or scoring a goal. Rounders- In Rounders, the children will be developing their hand to eye coordination. D+T |
Mechanical Systems: Making a slingshot car - In this unit we will be exploring the mechanical systems in cars and looking at the different parts that make them run. We will then be creating our very moving cars using a slingshot mechanism. |

Music |
This children will build a repertoire of songs to perform at the ‘Spring Soiree’ at the end of term. |
|
RSHE |
This half term we will be exploring cycle safety, healthy living and appropriate touch. |
Reminders:

As always, good attendance is essential to maintain good progress.

If your child is absent for any reason please contact the school office as soon as possible.

Children can get a new book from our school library every Wednesday.
-
A labelled filled water bottle should be brought into school every day.
-
School shoes should be black and preferably children should wear black trainers on P.E days (Mondays and Fridays).
Home Learning:

Home learning will be set via Google Classroom at the start of every week to consolidate that week’s learning.

Children should be reading regularly at home and reading with an adult 3-4 times per week. Please discuss the texts that your children are reading.

Please continue to use TT Rockstars and Spelling shed at home to continue the progress for the children’s learning.

Year 4 loved dressing up and having a go at Bollywood dancing this week to celebrate Diwali.
In English, the children have been working on forming arguments for whether we should ban the dark or not.

In PE Year 4 had a go throwing a javelin. They were amazing!
We managed to beat the heat on Monday with some mindful art out in the shade.
Well done to Year 4 for all managing to create a series circuit in Science this week. They all were able to light up their lightbulbs.
Year 4 loved meeting the ducks this week while some of us were at District Athletics.
During Computing, Year 4 created mini flipbooks as part of their animation topic.
Well done to all the children at Woodrow. You were all absolutely amazing.

In Design and Technology, Year 4 have started to make slingshot cars. Here they are building the chassis of the car.
In Maths, Year 4 have been learning about Place Value. Here they are using cards to create 4 digit numbers.
Year 4 have been working hard building Pavillions in D&T.
Year 4 have been testing how different size objects create either a high or a low pitch. They used a variety of widths of elastic bands and created musical instruments out of them. Well done year 4!
