Governor Pen Portraits
Meet our current Governing Body for 2025-2026 and find out a little more about them:
Stephen Flannery (Chair of Governors/Co-opted Governor)
Chair of Governors
I’ve worked in the music industry for almost 25 years, working for record labels, music publishers, music festivals and artist managers – specialising in the finance and business affairs of each company.
My daughter Olivia attended Homerswood from the start of her schooling leaving Y6 in 2024. I’ve always thought the school had a fantastic atmosphere and set her up with a great education and group of friends.
It was when Olivia was starting Y1 that I decided to join the Governing Body as I wanted to help the school to continue to deliver the quality of education and enrichment for the children that they do and support the Head to manage all of the important elements of successfully running a school.
It is safe to say that I am obsessed with music, so that tends to dominate my free time, and I love going to see live music and buying records. I also love spending time with my family and looking after our rescue pets – the cats KitKat and Oreo and our dog Gio!
There were too many great books to choose just one…so I’ve chosen three for different age groups that I loved reading with Olivia: “Don’t Forget the Bacon!” by Pat Hutchins, “Giraffe’s Can’t Dance” by Giles Andrae & Guy Parker-Rees and “George’s Marvellous Medicine” by Roald Dahl.

Evi Katsapi-White (Vice Chair of Governors/Parent Governor)
Vice Chair of Governors
My name is Evi Katsapi-White and I am the co-opted vice chair of governors at Homerswood. I am an Associate Professor in Psychology and Special Education at UCL where I teach psychologists, teachers and SENCos.
With over 20 years’ experience working with children with special educational needs, their parents and teachers as well as external professionals and local authorities; I am the link governor for SEND and pupil premium. I became a parent governor in 2023 when my child was at Homerswood as I really wanted to offer my support to the school and already had four years experience as a governor in another school.
Being a volunteer reader and helping to organise the Friends of Homerswood events gave me the opportunity to get to know the amazing children, staff and parents of Homerswood. With schools striving to meet narrow government targets receiving minimum funding I am keen to ensure important aspects of our children’s education are not neglected.
I am passionate about inclusive education and keen to ensure all children achieve their full potential irrespective of ability, race, language, religion or culture. In my free time, I like walking, drawing and dancing. My favourite children’s book is ‘The lion inside’ by Rachel Bright & Jim Field because ‘no matter your size, we all have a lion and a mouse inside’.

Mica Kettle (Headteacher)
Headteacher
I am proud to serve as Headteacher Governor at Homerswood, where I have the privilege of working alongside a dedicated team to provide the very best educational experiences for our children.
With over 14 years of teaching experience and 4 years as a Headteacher, I have worked in both one-form and two-form entry schools with a variety of catchments and diverse needs. Throughout my career, my passion has remained the same; ensuring that every child has the opportunity to be successful. I am committed to developing an exciting, engaging curriculum offer that not only supports academic achievement but also nurtures each child’s personal growth and wellbeing.
My connection to Homerswood is both professional and personal. As Headteacher, I am fully invested in the school’s vision and values, and as a parent of three children (including a set of twins who keep me on my toes) I am constantly reminded of the wonder of learning through a child’s eyes.
I am a Governor to lead and share the strategic overview of the school’s development and to champion inclusivity. It is a priority for me that every child feels safe, valued, and able to thrive. I am particularly passionate about curriculum development and ensuring that all pupils, regardless of their starting points, are supported to achieve their full potential.
Equally important to me is bringing the community together and working in partnership with families, staff, and the wider community to create a strong sense of belonging. I believe that collaboration and shared vision are key to providing the best possible educational experience for every child.
Outside of school, I love spending time with my family and enjoying the little adventures that everyday life with young children brings.
Favourite children’s book: We’re Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen.
I love how this story allows you to create a soundscape with your voice, and the repetitive nature makes it a fun and memorable book to read with young children.

Rebecca Fitts (Deputy Headteacher/Co-opted Governor)
Co-opted Governor
My name is Bec Fitts, and I am the Deputy Head and co-opted Governor at Homerswood. With over 16 year of experience in education, I have developed expertise in school leadership, SEND and curriculum development.
My experience spans across a diverse range of primary school settings, where I have focused on creating inclusive learning environments and promoting achievement for all. As a committed member of the Homerswood team, I work closely with staff, pupils, and families every day to support the school’s vision and values. I am passionate about fostering a nurturing and inspiring atmosphere for all children.
In my role as Deputy Head, I am deeply invested in ensuring every pupil receives a high-quality education tailored to their needs. I contribute to governance by supporting strategic planning and safeguarding initiatives, and I am particularly interested in curriculum development and pupil wellbeing.
Outside of school, I am a qualified makeup artist and enjoy exploring creative opportunities in this area.
My favourite children's book is The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle because of its timeless story, beautiful illustrations and it's also my son, James' favourite bedtime story.

Kerry Cain (Staff Governor)
Staff Governor
Before becoming a teacher, I worked across several industries, gaining valuable experience in project management and local government. I started my teaching journey at Homerswood in 2005 and, over the years, have taught in every year group from Nursery to Year 6. I’ve worked both part-time and full-time, and during my part-time years I also taught in other schools and managed a preschool for ten years.
I now teach Reception as well as leading Music and English across the school. My favourite part of working at Homerswood is building positive, trusting relationships with pupils and their families.
At home, life is kept lively by my three children (aged 11 to 17), along with our dog, Penny, and our cat, Elsie. Any spare time I do find is usually spent enjoying music, reading, or catching up with friends and family. I am proud of my welsh culture and speak the language fluently.
One of my favourite children’s stories is Tadpole’s Promise—its abrupt ending never fails to make me gasp then wonder if the frog is still waiting for it's beautiful rainbow.

Sandra Williams (Staff Governor)
Staff Governor
Hi, I’m Sandra Williams, one of the co-opted governors at Homerswood School and the link governor for young carers. I have worked at Homerswood School as a Teaching Assistant since 2012, having previously been a volunteer and an active member of the school’s Parent and Teacher Association.
My connection with Homerswood School began as a parent, when my two youngest children attended the school, starting in 2008 and 2009 respectively. Over the years, I have had the privilege of seeing the school grow and continue to provide a supportive and inclusive environment for all its pupils.
I am passionate about Homerswood School and our local community. As a governor, I am committed to helping the school maintain its strong sense of care, ensuring that every child; including our young carers ; feels valued, supported, and able to reach their full potential.
Outside of school, I love spending time with my family and walking my dog. I also enjoy sharing stories with my grandchild, our current favourite book to read together is Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy by Lynley Dodd, a timeless classic that always makes us smile.

Lisa Charters (Parent Governor)
Parent Governor
My name is Lisa Charters and I’m a Parent Governor at Homerswood Primary and Nursery School. After starting my carer as a mainstream primary school teacher, I’ve spent the last 25yrs developing expertise in specialist education. I now work with children and young people who require alternative provision to successfully access learning and to achieve their potential.
As someone who lives in the local area, and as a parent whose child attends Homerswood, I have always appreciated the strong sense of community and inclusion at the school. I chose to stand as Parent Governor to contribute positively to this ethos and to support the school in continuing to flourish.
I am currently Link Governor for both ‘Health and Safety’ and ‘Mental Health and Wellbeing’. I have always been passionate to ensure every child correctly identifies themselves as being a respected, valued and successful learner. I bring that passion to my Link Governor roles, whilst my experience working in a vast array of educational settings informs my knowledge and understanding of ‘Mental Health and Wellbeing’ in relation to school staff.
Outside of work and volunteering, I enjoy time with my family and friends. I’ve recently discovered yoga which promotes my own wellbeing.
My favourite children’s book is currently, ‘Sometimes I Like to Curl Up in a Ball’ by Vicki Churchill and illustrated by Charles Fuge. It’s about a little Wombat who doesn’t hold back from immersing himself in doing the simple things that bring him joy.

Katie Skinner (Co-opted Governor)
Co-opted Governor
My name is Katie Skinner and I am a co-opted Governor at Homerswood. My role within the governing body is to assist with Safeguarding.
My background is in law. I am a Chartered Legal Executive and have been qualified for over 13 years. I have worked in a legal setting for over 20 years. I work in family law and at a local specialist family law solicitors’ firm.
As a parent of two sons and a local resident I am passionate about contributing where I can to the continued success of Homerswood. I joined the governing body in November 2022 to support the school in providing a high level of education as well as a nurturing environment allowing all pupils to thrive and enjoy their education.
I have a safeguarding role within the governing body which means I assist the school to ensure effective safeguarding measures are in place, keeping everyone as safe as possible.
Outside of school, I spend a lot of my time supporting my two sons on the football pitch and spending time with my family and friends.
My favourite children’s book is Dear Zoo as my sons used to love reading this when they were much younger. It is also a wonderful interactive book for children.

Gina Wilson (Co-opted Governor)
Co-opted Governor
Hi, I am Gina Wilson, one of the Co-opted Governors at Homerswood.
I’m a Deputy Headteacher at an inner London Primary School and have been teaching for 17 years. The majority of my teaching experience has been in Haringey and has allowed me to give back to the community I was raised in. I am passionate about improving the life chances of disadvantaged children and have high aspirations and ambitions for all.
Now as a Welwyn Garden City resident with children of my own, I want to give something back to the community within which my family now live and be part of Homerswood's journey.
Being the link governor for English at Homerswood is an area I am truly passionate about and hope I can support the school in providing an enriched learning experience.
In my free time, I love spending time with my family and exploring new parts of the world. My favourite children's book is 'Ish' by Peter H. Reynolds because it encourages us to be creative rather than focusing on getting it 'right'.

Matthew Arnell (Co-opted Governor)
Co-opted Governor
Hi, I'm Matthew Arnull, one of the co-opted Governors at Homerswood and the link governor for Maths.
I work as a Systems Engineer in the Aerospace industry, which means I make sure lots of different parts of a project work together smoothly - from people and processes through to technical systems! I have really developed my problem-solving skills and logical thinking in this role and hope to use these to help support the governing body and the school.
I grew up locally, going to primary school in Hatfield and secondary school in Stevenage, and I want to give something back to the community I've been part of all my life. I'm also extremely passionate about STEM and hope to share that enthusiasm with the pupils at Homerswood.
In my free time, I love doing sport (playing football, trampolining, going to the gym) and spending time with my family.
My favourite children's book is Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson - not only is it a great story about friendship and teamwork, but the cat always reminded me of my childhood pet!
