Relationship, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) at Homerswood

Relationship, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) at Homerswood

Relationship, Sex and Health Education at Homerswood Primary School enables pupils to learn about personal, social, moral and emotional development. It equips children and young people with the information, skills and values they need to have safe, respectful and enjoyable relationships and encourages mutually respectful relationships and empathy for others. It empowers them to take responsibility for their physical and mental wellbeing.

Our intent for the RSHE curriculum is for our pupils to grow up healthy, happy, safe and able to manage the challenges and opportunities of modern Britain. RSHE at Homerswood is a whole school approach and is inclusive of all pupils. Our curriculum aims to respond to the diversity of children’s cultures, faiths and family backgrounds. We have a commitment to ensure that our curriculum is relevant to all pupils and is taught in a way that is age appropriate.

At Homerswood School we follow a mindful and sequential RSHE scheme of work called Jigsaw, which is compliant with the statutory Relationships, Sex and Health Education for September 2020. It is structured into 6 half-termly puzzles (units), with the whole school studying different aspects of the unit at the same time.

The units are:

  • Being Me in My World
  • Celebrating Difference
  • Dreams and Goals
  • Healthy Me
  • Relationships
  • Changing Me

Spring Term 2023

Homerswood continue to use the Jigsaw scheme of work. The first half term, we will be covering the Dreams and Goals unit. Children will think about setting and achieving goals, overcoming challenges, perseverance and jobs and careers. After half term, we will cover the Healthy Me unit which covers keeping healthy, staying safe, online safety and emotional and mental health.

Year 1 have been learning about how to keep ourselves healthy. They worked in small groups to sort objects by category.

Healthy Me - Year 2 have been learning about healthy food and (some) enjoyed trying healthy houmous with carrots and breadsticks!

All year groups enjoyed a wellbeing and kindness workshop.

Year 2 created imaginary birds for their Garden of Dreams and Goals.

Being Me in My World - Nursery and Reception have been making new friends and working together as a team.

Relationships - we have celebrated Pride Month both in class and in our Votes for Schools assemblies.

Healthy Me - Nursery have been learning about the different ways to keep their teeth clean and healthy

Year 4 worked together in small groups to achieve an end goal. They designed and then created their own Mr Potato Head to enter a class competition.

Year 5 completed a group activity where they had to make the tallest tower with only 10 sheets of paper and some tape. They then reflected on which role they had in their team and how they might tackle the challenge differently if they did it again.

Being Me in My World - Nursery and Reception have been making new friends and learning how to be a good and kind friend.

Healthy Me - Nursery and Reception have been learning how to look after their teeth and keep them healthy.

Relationships - Year 4 were thinking about special people in their lives, why they are special and how they can express this to them.

Dreams and Goals - Year 5 have been learning about different jobs and careers and what salaries they earn. They then discussed what their dream job would be and how they can achieve this.

Votes for Schools assemblies supports RSHE - each week topics are discussed that affect the children and through activities and discussion, they can express their views and opinions.
